Brett Deciding On Role With Royals

Sep 25, 2014 4:09 PM

George Brett, who is serving as the interim hitting coach of the Royals, is undecided about his future.

Brett has been serving in the role for a month.

"Really," Brett said when reminded about the length of his stay. "Well, I'll probably meet with Dayton [Moore] when I get home."

Has Brett made a decision on continuing?

"No," he responded.

Is he having fun in the job?

"When we win," he said. "When you score runs and we win, it's always fun."

Mets Will Monitor Harvey's Workload

Sep 25, 2014 4:15 PM

Matt Harvey is on pace to set a career-high in innings pitched, something the Mets are looking at closely.

After throwing 169 1/3 innings over two levels last season, Harvey is currently on track to throw 249 this season.

A 47-percent jump would be well above established industry standards of 15-20 percent.

"As we continue into the season with three months to go, always remember something: we are not -- we are not -- going to hinder this kid's health by killing him now, when the future is so bright," Terry Collins said.

"With Wheeler coming, with Montero coming, all these young prospect pitchers coming, we're not going to jeopardize what's down the road for right now. I'm not going to do it. So we're going to monitor his workload, and hopefully he gets through the month of September."

Braves Retire Chipper Jones' No. 10

Sep 17, 2014 3:56 AM

A near capacity crowd at Turner Field showered Chipper Jones with cheers and praise on Friday night as the Braves retired his No. 10 jersey.

Jones retired at the end of the 2012 season.

"It still doesn't seem real," Jones said. "I played baseball. I haven't cured cancer or anything. It's almost embarrassing to be getting all this attention and all the accolades. It's so humbling."

Jones, the 1999 NL MVP and an eight-time All-Star, was honored before Atlanta's game against Arizona.

Howard Takes Blame For Loss To Dodgers

Oct 4, 2014 1:34 PM

Ryan Howard slipped trying to field a bunt by Juan Uribe on Thursday night against the Dodgers.

Los Angeles eventually beat Philadelphia by taking the lead later in the inning.

"I slipped," Howard said. "I cost my team the game. Of all the plays, the plays you make nine times out of 10, you slip.

"It wasn't the greatest game for me. I take full responsibility for it. You've got to have a better swing. You've got to have a better at bat in that situation. That could change the flow of the game. I've got to come up with that play. I picked a hell of a time to slip. I take full responsibility for it."

Red Sox Demote Will Middlebrooks

Sep 18, 2014 5:34 AM

The Red Sox have decided to option Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A Pawtucket.

Jose Iglesias, considered the team's future shortstop, will play third on an everyday basis going forward.

"Will will be getting regular at-bats," John Farrell said. "For him to get back on track, he needs every-day at-bats.

"His skills haven't gone backward. He's still a very talented player. He needs consistent work that will allow him to replicate his swing. This isn't uncommon for a young player, to take a step back now for the bigger picture.

"He will be our everyday third baseman ... (but) this isn't going to be a numbers deal. It's not a matter of hitting .310 and coming back here."

Since June 24, 2012, Middlebrooks is hitting .210 in 328 at-bats.
